SanDisk is the world's largest supplier of flash data memory cards. Born in Palo Alto, California in 1988, the company was founded in 1988 by Dr. Harari Eli, an international authority in the field of non-volatile storage technology. In November 1995, Sandisk became a publicly traded company with the Nasdaq ticker SNDK. In 2004, Sandisk had revenues of $1.8 billion. The company employs more than 5,000 people worldwide. The company is headquartered in Milpitas, California, USA. Sandisk's products are sold through more than 260,000 retail stores worldwide.


Sandisk's Asia Pacific headquarters is located in Hong Kong. Sandisk also has sales offices in Shanghai, Taipei and Seoul, and sells its products through the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) channel and a network of distributors and retailers in numerous Asian countries and regions, including China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.


At the end of 2006, Sandisk opened its first manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China, using the most advanced manufacturing technology to produce industry-leading products. Sandisk designs, develops, manufactures and markets flash memory card products for use in a variety of electronic systems. Flash cards allow data to be stored in a compact, removable format. SanDisk's flash memory card products help drive mass market sales of digital cameras, multimedia mobile phones, USB flash drives, and other digital consumer devices. Sandisk holds more than 4,900 patents in the United States and other countries and licenses its technology to a number of companies.
In October 2015, Sandisk was acquired by Western Digital for $19 billion.

Market share

Sandisk focuses on three digital consumer markets: digital cameras and other consumer electronics, full-featured mobile phones, and USB flash drives. SanDisk is a leader in the production and sales of flash memory cards, with approximately one-third of the global market share. According to Semico Research, the worldwide flash memory card market reached $3.3 billion in revenue in 2003 and is expected to grow to $12 billion by 2006. SanDisk's strategy is to identify mass consumer markets for flash memory products and manufacture a large number of flash cards in all major formats for the target market, thus enabling SanDisk to provide one-stop sourcing for its retail and OEM users. SanDisk's fiscal 2004 revenue was $1.8 billion, up from $1.1 billion in 2003. Net profit in 2004 was $267 million.

Main product

Sandisk is the only company with the right to manufacture and sell all major flash memory card formats, Including CompactFlash® (CF), SD, microSD, SmartMedia, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick PRO and other Memory Stick products, As well as an xD-Picture Card and USB flash drive. The majority of the company's flash card revenue comes from sales to retailers, with the remainder coming from sales to Oems.

Sandisk also makes the second most popular mp3 player in the U.S. Sansa is its brand of MP3 music and video player.
