Hard disk number
Western Digital's IDE drives include the Caviar (Caviar) and Experl (Expert) series, though the latter has long since been discontinued. WD hard disks are basically divided into three categories: high-end BB series, mid-end AB series, low-end EB series, of which only BB series hard disks are 7200 RPM products. The number of Western digital hard disks usually consists of a main number and an additional number, but Western Digital does not disclose the specific meaning of the additional number to the retail market.
The numbering format of Western Digital varies according to the product series, and the numbering method is simple and clear, consisting of 12 numbers or letters. In the 12 numbers, the first 6 numbers are the main numbers, and the last 6 numbers are additional numbers. The main series of caviar in the desktop market is labeled as "manufacturer code + capacity + speed, cache + interface type".
Principal number part
WD - XXXX - X - X
The first part "WD" is short for "Western Digital" and refers to the products of Western Digital Corporation.
The second part usually consists of 3 or 4 digits, indicating the capacity, and is measured in 100M. The logo is the same as Seagate's, with the 4-bit "1200" representing 120GB and the 3-bit "800" representing 80GB
The letters in the third part indicate speed and cache capacity. A indicates a caviar hard disk whose rotational speed is 5400 RPM/ min. "B" indicates a caviar hard disk whose speed is 7200 RPM/ min. E indicates the Protege series hard disks whose rotational speed is 5400 RPM/ min. "J" represents a high-end caviar hard disk with a speed of 7200 RPM/ min and a data cache of 8MB. "G" represents the most high-end desktop hard disk Raptor series with a speed of 10,000 RPM/ min and a data cache of 8MB.
The fourth part describes the interface types. A- Ultra ATA66, B- Ultra ATA100, W represents the hard disk used in the AV (digital video and audio) field, D represents the Serial ATA150 interface.
Additional numbered part
- X - X - XX XX
The first part is the OEM customer identification, 00 is the retail market, and the rest is the OEM customer code. If it is other characters, it is the OEM customer code, different numbers correspond to different OEM customers, and this number is usually not for the retail market.
The first character in the second part indicates the capacity of a single disk. C indicates that the capacity of a single disk is 40GB, D indicates 66GB, and E indicates 83GB. Corresponding to the single disk capacity, CP--Protg series (commonly referred to as EB series) 40GB single disk capacity version, CB--Caviar5400 series (AB series) 40GB single disk capacity version, CA--Caviar7200 series (BB series) 40GB single disk capacity version, CR- Caviar SE 7200 series (i.e. JB series with 8MB cache) 40GB single-disk capacity version.
The last character in the second part indicates the version code of the same series of hard disks, which changes with different series. "A" stands for 7200 RPM, BB series with Ultra ATA100 interface; "B" stands for 5400 RPM, Ultra ATA66 interface AB series; "P" stands for 5400 RPM, EB series with Ultra ATA100 interface; "R" stands for 7200 RPM, Ultra ATA100 interface, JB series with 8MB cache. In the single disc 66GB and 83GB products, there are also other letters such as "U", "V", corresponding to JB series and BB series products respectively.
The fourth part is the Firmware version of the hard disk. We commonly have "F0", "A0" and so on.
